Rock singer, born Stephanie Lynn Nicks, on May 26, 1948, in Phoenix, Arizona. Her grandfather, a country singer, passed on his love of singing to Nicks, who was singing at the age of four in her parent’s club and writing songs as a teenager.
Nicks met Lindsey Buckingham in high school and both joined a local band, Fritz. The band moved to the San Francisco area and established a small following while opening for bigger acts such as Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix. Fritz broke up in 1971, but by this time Nicks and Buckingham were lovers who decided to remain together both personally and professionally.
Nicks and Buckingham moved to Los Angeles where they recorded an album for Polydor entitled Buckingham Nicks in 1973. The record was not successful commercially and Nicks worked as a waitress and house cleaner to make ends meet. At the end of 1974, Mick Fleetwood, drummer for the English rock group Fleetwood Mac, happened to hear a tape of Nicks and Buckingham at a Los Angeles studio and, needing a guitarist, called Buckingham.
Buckingham told Fleetwood that he would join only if Nicks were also part of the deal. In 1975, Nicks and Buckingham joined Fleetwood Mac and quickly recorded the eponymous collection that went straight to number one. Nicks’ Rhiannon and Landslide were smash hits that made her a rock superstar overnight.
In 1976, Nicks and Buckingham had a personal falling out, but continued to record together. Rumours, the resulting Fleetwood Mac album, was a record-setting hit. It spent over half a year at the top of the charts and broke sales records around the world. Nicks’ song “Dreams” was the group’s first number one single. During this time, Nicks had a brief affair with Mick Fleetwood and began an up and down relationship with Eagles drummer Don Henley.
Although relationships among the group were strained, more successful albums followed for both Nicks and Fleetwood Mac. The first of four solo albums in the 1980s, Bella Donna, which included the hit duet with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around,” and “Edge of Seventeen (Just Like the White Winged Dove),” was released in 1981 and Nicks’ fame threatened to overshadow Fleetwood Mac. Her second solo effort, The Wild Heart, (1983) produced the hit “Stand Back."
In 1983, Nick’s friend Robyn died of leukemia three days after the birth of her son. Nicks married her widow, Kim Anderson shortly afterwards, apparently believing that the infant needed a mother. However, the marriage lasted only a year and Nicks began having serious problems with alcohol and drugs. She entered the Betty Ford Clinic and eventually overcame her chemical dependency.
Nicks, who now lives in Arizona, released a box set compilation entitled Enchanted in 1998 and rejoined Fleetwood Mac for a reunion tour and album called The Dance that was well received by the public.
