Diehard carbohydrate addict takes on the South Beach Diet...

Only two months ago I told myself I wasn't going to go on another diet...ever. Now I'm starting the South Beach Diet (again)!

That is my pattern. I start a diet and do well with it for awhile then I plateau, get burned out and quit. I then tell myself that I will "do my own thing" and become "anti-diet" for a couple of months and then I start to feel uncomfortable in my skin, my clothes start getting tight and I do another diet.

The key for me is to find a way for my body and brain to convince itself that it doesn't need bread and sugar to survive. Also, I cannot only exercise without food control or only observe foot control without exercise. I need to be spot on with both.

So, today was day ONE of phase 1, which is essentially major carb withdrawal. The food plan consists mainly of low fat dairy, lean meat and veggies. No fruit, no bread, no cereal, no alcohol, no pasta, etc.

In the past I haven't done well with low carb...but I believe that the reason was that I didn't follow the recommendations for AM and PM snacks and I gave in to peer pressure. I am hoping that this time something clicks and this is the plan that will get me to my weight goal. I say that every time I start a new diet.

Today went pretty well. My weak moments were at lunch and after dinner this evening. At lunch it was hard to not grab my usual fruit and/or cookie. It is such a habit for me. Then, after dinner tonight I wanted something sweet. I made the ricotta vanilla creme and that helped alot. I'm expecting tomorrow to be harder as I expect my carb withdrawal headache to kick in.

Oh...there was another weak moment this afternoon when a co-worker said "hey let's go across the street to Caribou!" and I said "yes" without even thinking. Once I got over there I realized that my options were limited. I ended up with a sugar free iced Northern Lite--which was south beach friendly!

So, the beans are snapped for tomorrow night and the fridge is full of tons of South Beach appropriate fare, I'm ready to go!
