We got a phone call yesterday from our Credit Card company requesting we call them back to verify some credit card purchases that were made on our account. I didn't think too much about it because we had just purchased gas and I had made some online purchases the night before.
When I called them back the first question was did we make a purchase for $688.00 today at an online computer supply website? NO. With that answer they turned me over to "fraud" and asked me about 4 more purchases that had been attempted that day at various online computer supply stores. NO, NO, NO, and NO. Thankfully they had declined all of these attempts to purchase...Maybe shipping/billing addresses didn't match up?
So now our credit card account is closed and they are doing a fraudulant activity report and will send it out to us. We will get new credit cards and life will go on.
I want to know what type of person commits this type of crime and I'd certainly like to know that this person will be punished for the attempt. More than likely they've been successful in the past and were just unlucky this time.
I want to know how they got my credit card number. Was it a dishonest store employee somewhere here in town, a computer hacker, someone who dug through the garbage and found something I forgot to shred?
I am in the process of getting our credit reports and changing all my online passwords, and I need to make sure my anti-phishing software is up to date.
It sickens me to realize that there are people out there just waiting to pretend to be me...

The same thing happened to me last spring! It makes me so angry!! How do they get the number?! I don't trust people who take my card away from me at restaurants anymore--they can write your name and card number down and order on the internet!
